I'm a student, so I don't have nearly as much time for leisure reading as I'd like. If I manage to read an entire course book instead of just the assigned chapters, I'll review that here, too.
This book has some pretty damn racist stuff in ways that can't entirely be excused by "it's the 1920s!" There is a high-born Maori working as a friendly chambermaid on the Hinemoa, who even gives precedence among her people to a white scholar who has made a life's study of Maori cultures. The "big friendly stupid native" trope rears its ugly head. It was pretty hard to read, though the rest of it was prime Phryne fare, with curious characters, clever tricks, casual sex and glorious luxury.
